Experience the Peace and Serenity

Old Mulkey Meetinghouse State Historic Site

Built in 1804, this cruciform shaped log meetinghouse was the site of the most famous trials in Monroe County history… the heresy trials of John Mulkey by Mill Creek Baptist Church. The impact of these trials split the church and led the congregation to play a leading role in what we now know as South-Central Kentucky’s “restoration movement”. Now a KY State Park, this site offers various self-lead activities including the park specific quest, “The View from the Pulpit”.

Join Us for a Game

Marble Club Super Dome

Monroe County is the Marble Capital of the Commonwealth; not the mineral marble but the game of marbles! Like our ancestors, we still play with marbles made from flint. Our game of choice is Rolley-Hole! There are numerous marble yards scattered throughout the county but the only one totally enclosed is the Marble Club Super Dome in Tompkinsville. Drop by…maybe you’ll catch a game!

A One-of-a-Kind Main Street Store

The Wooden Casket

Quite possibly this is the only casket store on any Main Street in the USA! Visitors are welcome to come in and see the offerings, many of which qualify for “eco-friendly” burials.

Once Freedom Came

Freetown Church (a.k.a Mt. Vernon A.M.E. Church)

Built in 1846 by “the freed slaves of William Howard” this church “reflects the family heritage of our great ancestors who struggled and suffered to make a dream of tranquility and freedom become a reality for all our oppressed people.” Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Kentucky Historical Society’s Historical Highway Marker Program, this little church with its adjacent cemetery whispers the stories of its congregation.
